With more wounded, injured and sick than the opening scenes in Saving Private Ryan, Kanturk AFC u14 prepared to battle Corkbeg from Division 1 in the National Trophy this Sunday in Gurteenard.
A very even first half had both sides struggling to find an opening. But as the clock ticked down JJ Holland put in a pin point cross for Denis Murphy to head home and put The Turks 1-0 up at the break.
Into the second half and Kanturk began to create the better chances. 15 minutes in and a lovely build up down the left flank with JJ Holland, Ross O’Callaghan a Billy O’Callaghan resulted in Billy firing a bullet of a shot into the roof of the net. 2-0.
But to their credit Corkbeg fought back and scored a nice headed goal with 10 minutes to go.
Kanturk had to dig deep as belief flooded into Corkbeg. It was everyman into the trenches for the closing 5 minutes as battle raged. The Kanturk line held firm, and into the quarter finals (Cork region) we go. A great team performance.
Our thanks to Corkbeg for travelling to us on a cold winter morning, and to all our players and supporters for believing in this team.
